Sissu graduated from the high school, Hagaskoli, studied for one year at the Art and Craft School of Iceland and in 1972 received a diploma from Bergenholtz Reklame Fagskole in Copenhagen after a year of study. She took courses at Det Kongelige Kunstakademi in Denmark and studied Italian at the University of Stranieri in Perugia, Italy. In February of 1974 she had a serious accident and was confined to a wheelchair the rest of her life. After rehabilitation in Iceland and in Denmark and receiving acupunctural treatments in Paris, she continued her education. During 1977 and 1978, she studied painting at the Arts Students League in New York. In 1979 Sissu enrolled in the School of Visual Arts, New York and received a BFA degree in 1982. Her daughter, Sunna, was born in November of that year. During the six years following her return to Iceland, Sissu exhibited her artwork in eight private exhibits. Her artwork included large oil paintings and sculptures, as seen at Gallery Bleikfridur in 1983 and at Kjarvalsstadir in 1988. Her artwork was also exhibited at the Schwab Art Festival in Chicago in 1983.

Sissu worked in various art mediums. Her deep interest in technology and science was reflected in her artwork and she constantly ventured into unexplored territory, both in art and in life.

From 1990 to 1995, Sissu studied for a Masters degree in Architectue at the University of New Mexico í Albuquerque, where she was chosen "outstanding graduate student of the year" in 1993. After her return to Iceland, she divided her time between painting, sculpting, interior design and architecture. She was also employed at the Gudrun Jonsdottir architectural firm.

Sissu had a burning interest in spinal injury research and contributed her time and input to facilitate the cooperation of International scientist, who were engaged in the field of spinal injury. She was one of the founders of SEM (the association for recovering spinal injured in Iceland,) designed and edited their news letter. Sissu believed people in wheelchairs should be given the choice to live independently, outside institutional housing, and campaigned tirelessly for that cause. For herself, she designed and adapted a former grocery store into an adventurous home and a private gallery.

In all, Sissu held 20 private exhibits - the last one at the Photographic Museum of Reykjavik in 2008. She participated in various collaborative exhibits, the last one at the Art Center, in Skagaströnd 2009. Sissu was a member several associations of Icelandic artists.

Sissu's funeral was held in Hallgrimskirkja in Reykjavik on July 7th, 2011
